The Kolkata Knight Riders made it obvious they wanted a captain when they entered the TATA IPL 2023 Auction. On the day of the auction, the franchise made every effort to get the services of Indian batter Shreyas Iyer for a staggering INR 12.25 Crore. He was quickly appointed captain of the team since it was their highest bid in the auction. Shreyas Iyer, a seasoned performer for his prior IPL franchise and the Indian national team, would like to leave his imprint as skipper of the purple and gold.

IPL 2023: What captaincy alternatives for KKR  injured Shreyas Iyer?

On March 31, the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is due to begin. While some clubs are busy finding replacements for injured players, all of the teams have started their preparations. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is expected to be added to the lengthy injured list. His back problem has come up once more. After playing for two days, he failed to score in the fourth and final Test against Australia at Ahmedabad. Even India’s captain Rohit Sharma may have acknowledged at the post-game news conference that Iyer’s injury is not looking good right now.

Iyer is essentially out of the forthcoming ODI series against Australia, which casts severe doubt on his ability to play in the IPL in 2023. Iyer may miss a few games, if not a few matches the entire season, since it has been claimed that the scans of his back are not promising. As a result, KKR may need to consider other captaincy choices in the event that he is not available. In the event that Shreyas Iyer is unavailable, the following three players might captain KKR:

  • Andre Russell:

In times of need, KKR has relied on Andre Russell. Even in this situation, if it’s a temporary replacement for Iyer, the team may turn to him. Everyone is aware of Russell’s talent across the board. He has spent the most of his IPL career playing for KKR and has won games for them. The West Indies all-rounder has played in 98 games overall in the lucrative league, scoring 2035 runs with a perfect strike rate of 177.88 and recording 10 fifties. He has also claimed 89 victims thus far and has a five-wicket haul to his credit. Russell enjoys taking the initiative, and his performance may improve now that he is the team’s captain.

  • Sunil Narine:

Over the years, Sunil Narine, a player from the West Indies, has excelled for KKR. He has not only delivered game-winning performances with the ball but also with the bat, sometimes starting the innings. The fact that Narine has only ever represented KKR in the IPL demonstrates how important a player he is to the team. He has 152 wickets in 148 IPL games, with a superb economy rate of 6.63 and a five-wicket haul to his credit. Narine has scored 1025 runs at a strike rate of 162.7 when at the plate. A strong option to take Iyer’s position if he gets hurt and misses a few games is Narine because he has expertise coaching teams in other leagues as well.

  • Nitish Rana:

Another reliable player who might be chosen as captain is Nitish Rana. He is one of the players that will suit up for the squad in each of the team’s 14 league games, and he has participated in several games for the organization during his career. In addition to the Kolkata Knight Riders, Nitish Rana has also played for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. After making his debut in 2016, he has taken part in 91 games overall. He has 2181 runs scored with a strike rate of 134.22, an average of nearly 28. Rana is a part-time possibility as well because he occasionally bowls off-spin. In his first 18 innings of bowling, he has taken 7 wickets. If Rana is appointed captain in Iyer’s absence, his previous experience as Delhi’s domestic cricket skipper may be advantageous.

If Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of the IPL 2023, KKR has three options to choose from.

With a little more than two weeks remaining in the 16th season of the Indian Premier League, and regrettably for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Shreyas Iyer may not be available. It’s been a while since I’ve done this, but I’ve been meaning to for a while now. I’ve been meaning to do it for a while.

He didn’t get out to bat for India during their innings, though, since the problem reappeared during the decisive match in Ahmedabad. Iyer won’t be available for the ODI series against Australia, according to Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s comments following the game.

If Iyer is not available for the IPL, KKR could seek a replacement to improve their batting. If Iyer is ruled out, here are the three players that KKR can target:

  • Mohammed Azharuddeen

Mohammad Azharuddeen, a 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batter who plays for Kerala on the local circuit, may be a possibility for KKR. The franchisees passed over Azharuddin, whose base bid at the auction was Rs 20 Lakh. With a strike rate of 134.97 and participation in 38 T20s, he has scored 741 runs. In the 2020–21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Azharuddeen scored a century off just 37 balls against a potent Mumbai team. Royal Challengers Bangalore purchased him at the 2021 Auction, however he was unable to participate in any matches.

  • Jagadeesha Suchith

Jagadeesha Suchith, a player from Karnataka who also has a base price of Rs. 20 Lakh, is an all-arounder. Suchith has previously played for the Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 22 IPL games. Suchith has participated in 22 games but only scored 70 runs at a dismal strike of 114.75. He has a stronger track record with the ball, though, having taken 19 wickets at an 8.6 economy rate. Suchith has extensive knowledge of the household scene, which might be advantageous for KKR.

  • Priyam Garg

Although having a price tag of merely Rs. 20 Lakh, Priyam Garg, 22, who represented India in the 2020 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup, failed to sell at the mini-auction in December. Garg previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, although he did not have much success. Garg’s performance in T20 cricket hasn’t been all that great; after 44 games, his strike rate is only 115.35. But, KKR doesn’t have the luxury of several high-quality choices, therefore Garg could be taken into consideration.
